The Nor West Jockey Club, Roebourne is the second oldest race club in Western Australia and conduct four race meetings every year in the cooler Pilbara months of June and July. The Roebourne racecourse is situated on the North West Coastal Highway just one kilometre east of the Roebourne township and has full bar and catering facilities, TAB , bookmakers, live entertainment and traditional two up after the last race on every race day.
The Nor West Jockey Club race meetings are an integral part of the Pilbara race round which starts in late May in Port Hedland and ends in August in Newman. Every year Trainers and Jockeys travel north with their horses from the southern regions of Western Australia to support the Pilbara race round and the Roebourne Cup is one of the most treasured trophies to win.

The opening race meeting at Roebourne is always a grand event and is well supported by the local cultural groups and tourism operators. The six race card provides an early opportunity in the Pilbara race season for the trainers to test their horses on a pindan track.

Ladies Day at the Roebourne racecourse is the pinnacle of the social calendar in the region and every year the local women revel in the challenge of wearing their beautiful outfits in what many people call a harsh and challenging environment. The feature event of the Day is the City of Karratha Harding Cup over 1400m another race that has it past steeped in tradition. The Harding Cup race has its origins in the 1950’s and was a much coveted race for the local station owners to win with their Nor West bred horses.

Family day is always well supported by the local communities of Roebourne, Wickham, Karratha & Dampier and features a range of children’s activities. There are two feature races on this day, the Great Northern Handicap over 1600m and the Cossack Handicap over 1200m, the former race in the 1890’s was the starting point for a number of successful campaigns by North West horses during the Perth Summer racing season, which was eclipsed by the legendary North West bred Wandering Willie which won the Perth Cup in 1890 & 1892.

Regarded by some as one of the best race meetings in the North West, Roebourne Cup Day is a true spectacle and is always well supported by the local Pilbara communities. The seven event card never fails to please the punters and in more recent years the race meeting has gained exposure all round Australia via Sky Channel. Regularly attracting over 4,000 racegoers the day always finishes with one of the biggest two up games in the state. There are three feature races on the day, the Publicans Purse (1600m) and the Settlers Handicap (1200m) were two of the original races ever run by the Nor West Jockey Club under WATC rules in 1863. The first Roebourne Cup (2200m) was originally the Roebourne Plate ran in 1889 over the two miles (3200m).
